    Vista compatability

This software has not yet been tested on Vista.

    Setting up the FIVFIV Software
(pp. 8-9 of the Computational Methods manual)

The CTRL-ALT-DEL instruction applies only to older computers.

On older computers be sure to exit all programs prior to hitting CTRL-ALT-DEL.

On Windows 95 computers, exit all programs and do a Start, Shutdown, Restart instead of CTRL-ALT-DEL.

On Windows XP, there is no need to make any modifications to AUTOEXEC.BAT or CONFIG.SYS to get FIVFIV to work.

On Windows XP if c:\fiv is not added to the AUTOEXEC.BAT path, the FIVFIV programs must be accessed via the full path starting with c:\fiv (for example, c:\fiv\fivfiv, c:\fiv\fivbld, etc.)

    16-bit program considerations

FIVFIV was originally written for DOS as a 16-bit program, and at this time remains a 16-bit DOS program. This puts certain restrictions on the type of systems on which it can run.

As a 16-bit program, the following restricitons may apply depending upon which version of Windows you are using:

      • FIVIFV may only be able to access the first 2GB of a hard disk drive. Errors may occur if the program is installed beyond the first 2GB of a hard disk's space. This may be a problem if the first 2GB of a hard disk is completely full or if the program gets re-located beyond a disk's first 2GB during a defragmentation procedure.

      • FIVFIV may not be able to access input files that are located beyond the first 2GB of a hard disk's space. This may be a problem if the first 2GB of a hard disk is completely full or if input files get re-located beyond a disk's first 2GB during a defragmentation procedure.

      • FIVFIV does not support long file names -- input and output file names must be of the form 8.3.

Work-around: install and use the software on a hard disk partition that is 2GB or less, or, install and use the software on 2GB or less removeable media such as a read/write CD-ROM, Zip disk, or even a floppy diskette.

Because of costs involved, there are currently no plans to upgrade the software to a 32-bit version. Organizations that might be interested in supporting such an upgrade should contact support@hpntech.com.
