FIVFIV 98d May 2000 (for IBM/PC compatible computers only) by Frederic C. Shorter, Robert Sendek and Yvette Bayoumy HPN Technologies, Inc. 400 East Evergreen Boulevard Suite 224 Vancouver WA 98660 U.S.A. e-mail: support@hpntech.com web: http://www.hpntech.com/fivfiv This readme file contains the following sections: Installing the Registered Version of FIVFIV 98d About FIVFIV Obtaining FIVFIV 98d Re-distributing/Copying Installing the Evaluation Copy of FIVFIV 98d Installing the Registered Version of FIVFIV 98d ----------------------------------------------- You should install your registered version of FIVFIV 98d by putting the floppy diskette in your A: drive and typing A:FIVINSTA at your DOS C> prompt. Then follow the instructions on your screen. Alternatively, you may simply create a directory on your hard disk (for example, C:\FIV) and copy the files into it using the DOS command: COPY A:\*.* C:\FIV\*.* /S If you manually copy the files from the floppy to your hard drive you should also edit AUTOEXEC.BAT with a text editor to put C:\FIV in your path. About FIVFIV ------------ Planning organizations in more than 100 countries use this software to make population projections at national, regional, and city levels. It is also used widely for teaching and research in order to illustrate demographic theorems and to do simulations for analytical purposes. The software was originally developed at the Office of Population Research, Princeton University by Frederic C. Shorter and further developed by Frederic C. Shorter, Robert Sendek, and Yvette Bayoumy ath the Population Council. The authors of the software are now owners of or constants to HPN Technologies, Inc., which purchased all rights to the package in September 1996. Options have been added to accomodate a range of assumptions and output choices. FIVFIV is now available by download on the Internet from http://www.hpntech.com/popsite or by mail from HPN Technologies, Inc. Planning and statistical organizations: Although national projections are produced and published regularly by the World Bank and the UN Population Division, FIVFIV may be used to revise and update projections without any time lag according to new, or more accurate, information and assumptions. Planning and statistical authorities may also require projections at regional, provincial, city, or other levels of the population. FIVFIV can meet these needs. Academic and training institutions: For teaching about the growth and structure of human populations, projections can demonstrate specific theorems; e.g., populations forget their past and converge to stable populations when fertility and mortality are held constant. The use of "what if" assumptions is another technique for demonstrating theorems. Projections for particular countries or cities, are used to explore prospects for the future, or reverse projections can be used to reconstruct recent history. The manual explains the logical foundations of projections, and the kinds of inputs that are required to make a population projection. It gives examples; in fact, it is a short course on projections. Although FIVFIV makes it "easy" with a question and answer session, projections are not a computer game. It is advisable to use the manual along with the computer to make good projections. The manual may be downloaded or purchased from HPN Technologies, Inc. FIVFIV (the computer program) comes in four languages, English, French, Spanish, and Turkish. The user can switch from one language to another. More languages may be added later. It runs on personal computers (PCs) under DOS 2.0 or higher if they have at least 256KB of memory -- more is of course better. It can run on floppy disk systems (e.g. for teaching) when necessary. FIVFIV 98d is a major upgrade from FIVFIV 11.1. The authors would like to thank The Population Reference Bureau and the David and Lucile Packard Foundation for the funding necessary to make this upgrade possible. FIVFIV 98d includes the following major improvements: o Extrapolation of the east, west, north and south lifetables to 31 levels o The ability to aggregate in clusters o The ability to aggregate over stabe extends, old pops and differing initial years Current users of FIVFIV 11.1 and earlier may upgrade to FIVFIV 98d. Obtaining FIVFIV 98d -------------------- An evaluation copy of FIVFIV and the manual are available over the Internet at http://www.hpntech.com/popsite. The evaluation copy is fully functional and contains all the features of the registered version. We put our trust the end-user community to pay the registration fee if the software if found to be useful. Please keep in mind that maintaining and supporting FIVFIV does cost us money and the only way we can continue to make the software available is if users make the effort to support the product by paying their registration fees. o You may evaluate FIVFIV Release 98d software a two week period. o If you wish to continue using the software after the evaluation period, we request that you register the software and pay the US$79.95 registration fee. In addition to the right to keep using the software after the two week evaluation period, when you register the software, you will recieve a diskette and a printed copy of the publication Computational Methods for Population Projections. The authors of FIVFIV continue to strive to keep the costs of distributing and maintaining the FIVFIV package as low as possible. Minimal fees, however, are necessary to cover costs involved. The registered version of FIVFIV 98d is available at the following prices: FIVFIV Release 11.1 upgrade to FIVFIV 98d Users who have already paid their registration fee for FIVFIV 11.1 may receive a free upgrade by downloading the software from our web site. If you do recieve a copy of FIVFIV 98d from a source other than HPN Technologies, Inc. you are still responsible for the above registration fees should you decide to use the software. Installing the Evaluation Copy of FIVFIV 98d -------------------------------------------- The following files are available on the Internet. All files are in ZIP format (.ZIP) (you will require the pkunzip program (version 2.04g or later) to extract the .ZIP files, if you do not have a copy of PKZIP, it is a shareware program available at: http://www.pkware.com/download.html. readme.txt (size: 13,013) program.zip (size: 393,965) manual.zip (size: 1,873,435) Uncompress the ZIP format files as follows: pkunzip -d file.ZIP destination where "destination" is the location on your hard disk where you want the files to go. All files will decompress into a subdirectory \FIV of the "destination". It is recommended that you decompress to the root, of your hard disk, that is: pkunzip -d program.zip c:\ pkunzip -d manual.zip c:\ which will decompress all files into the subdirectory \FIV off of your c: root directory (note: this will not decompress into the root directory itself.) Note that the manual is in Adobe Acrobat format and must be viewed with the Adobe Acrobat reader. If you do not have the Acrobat reader, it is available as freeware at http://www.adobe.com/acrobat/readstep.html Installation: The following instructions will assume you used the recommended decompression statements above so that all software is located in C:\FIV. If this is not the case, you should adjust the following instructions accordingly. FIVFIV Program: Once you have downloaded the files, you are ready to use the system. The only installation really required is to put C:\FIV in the PATH statement of your AUTOEXEC.BAT file. You may do this manually via a text editor, or let the FIVFIV installation do it for you. To let the FIVFIV installation do it for you, at the C> prompt, type: C:\FIV\FIVINSTAL [ENTER] and follow the instructions on the screen. Note: the Install From directory should be changed from A: to C:\FIV. (You will be warned that C:\FIV already exists and information will be overwritten, this is OK. You will also see messages indicating that files cannot be copied onto themselves -- this is also OK.) Language Modules: The program will initially install with the English language module. You may change to a different language module by doing the following. At the C> prompt, type: C:\FIV\FIVTRANS [ENTER] and follow the instructions on the screen. Note: you should indicate the drive containing the language diskette is C:\FIV (NOT A:). Note: The language installation procedure modifies .EXE files. This may cause problems if you have virus protection enabled. It is strongly recommended that you disable virus protection before running FIVTRANS and re-enable it immediately after. Failure to do this could under certain circumstances result in the unintentional deletion of the FIVFIV.EXE file from you hard disk.
