Pyramids 98 is a software utility for quickly and easily generating population pyramids. We would especially like to thank Carl Haub at The Population Reference Bureau and Dr. Frederic C. Shorter for their advice and suggestions during the development of the software.

The software is meant to be used in conjunction with your word processing or graphic software in that it generates population projection pyramid graphics that can be copied into other windows software packages (pyramids cannot be printed directly from this utility).

The utility has import capabilities so that you may easily import tables of population data by age (for example from FIVFIV output) to generate the graphic pyramids.

Following is a sample graphic from the software:

Age labels, scales, sex titles, title, footnote, colors and patterns are all customizeable. Additional annotation may be added within your word processing or graphic program once the pyramid is pasted into it. The graphics are sized so that two pyramids should be able to fit side by side on a landscape page.

An evaluation copy of the software may be downloaded so that you may determine whether or not it is of use to you. The evaluation copy is fully functional, however, the graphic image generated contains distortion lines and does not display the third age group on the left. If you determine that the software is of use to you, you may purchase the licensed copy by printing out and mailing the order form. The software costs US$79.95.

The software has been tested on Windows XP Pro, however, it should work on any Windows system that Microsoft currently supports.

To evaluate the software:

• Download hpnpyr.zip file (48,701 bytes).
• Create a new folder on your hard disk for the program (for example, c:\Progarm Files\HPNPYR).
• Unzip HPNPYR.exe from hpnpyr.zip and store it in this new folder.
• Test the software:
  • Start
  • Run
  • Browse
  • Locate your unzipped HPNPYR.exe (for example, in c:\Program Files\HPNPYR.exe, or whereever you unzipped it)
  • Click OK
• You can make running the software easier by createing a shortcut on your desktop as follows:
  • Right-click your mouse anywhere in any blank area of your desktop.
  • From the pop-up menu, select: New
  • From the pop-up menu, select: Shortcut
  • Click on: Browse
  • Locate your unzipped HPNPYR.exe (for example, in My Computer C:\Program Files\HPNPYR.exe or whereever you unzipped it)
  • Click: OK
  • Click: Next
  • Click: Finish
